Computer repair technicians adopt dysfunctional hardware and
software and take the necessary steps to diagnose systems and ensure that they
are restored to usable conditions. Technicians also build and assemble personal
PCs and servers and can configure local computer networks and other related
devices.
Computer repair technicians are mainly concerned with
computer hardware components, but are sometimes asked to install or replace
drives, memory and cards. A computer repair technician may be required to
create a system by loading the operating system components and software onto
the hard drive. The technician will then identify and install the necessary
programs, known as drivers, which will allow the operating system software to
work with the hardware.
A computer repair technician will also work with computer
software. Usually these are operating system software. Computers may receive
viruses or other malware infections and the technician may be asked to remove
offensive programs.
If the operating system software does not work and cannot be
repaired, the technician usually backs up user data, if possible, and formats
the hard drive with a fresh copy of the operating system.
